Peter & Francoise

Hi everyone,

The heat has finally abated here in Houston.  The highs are only in the mid to high eighties rather than the nineties.  The humidity has also declined noticeably which makes this the best time of the year for the weather. It doesn't compare with autumn in the Northeast but it sure beats the winter.

Celine is growing and developing into a wonderful child. She is 15 months old (Oct. '99) and still not walking! It is driving me crazy but it doesn't seem to bother Francoise or her. She is close but not in any hurry to take that first step. She is very active and curious and in to anything she can get her hands on. Mechanical and electronic gadgets are especially interesting to her. She knows how to turn on everything within her reach. The television switch is getting worn out (literally) from her turning it on and off. Her favorite show is Teletubbies which I think is weird. She particularly likes my computer. She thinks the CD drive was put there for her entertainment. I don't know how she does it but she has a way of hitting the number keys and going on line. The first time she did it I thought I was hearing thins when I heard the computer dialing. At her age we have to keep a close eye on her.

Francoise is fine. She finally had to give up her 1979 Trans Am. It wasn't easy for her. It had 57,000 miles on it but it was falling apart. The air conditioner wasn't strong enough to keep Celine cool and she tired of dealing with an old car. We rented a van while we were in Alaska and she decided she wanted one. I thought we would be buying a sports car at our age but we have a Dodge Caravan instead. It seems life doesn't always go as we plan.

We took two trips this past summer, one to Chicago to visit Francoise' father's family, and one to Alaska to visit Lori. In between trips Andrew Mannino came to Houston to visit. We were quite busy for the months of July and August. It was great to see Lori and Lisa and experience Alaska. It is definitely different from any place I know in the Continental U.S. The land is beautiful and the people are friendly and not in a hurry. There is an over abundance of old hippies, drop-outs and semi-drop-outs. The show Northern Exposure was not far off the mark!

Lori is enrolled in a program at the University of Anchorage to be certified to teach. They are in dire need of teachers in Alaska as they are almost everywhere in the country. She is waitressing four days per week and going to school there It takes eighteen months to be certified. The waitressing is getting old so teaching is looking pretty good.

Lisa is taking three courses for her MBA so she can have it completed by May of 2000. She is very tired from all the work and looking forward to the end. When she gets her degree she wants to get out of the  retail industry and into one that is more technical. I have been keeping my eye open for contacts in various industries in the San Francsco area. She would like to be in finance which is her major.

I will keep in touch
